What innate or acquired abilities allow individuals, communities, businesses and environments to sustain? In this salon event we will take a look at different traits and techniques that enable long-term sustainability at the personal level, within communities and businesses, and on environmental scales as well. Join us for an engaging program that incorporates art and interactivity and looks at sustainability from a variety of different perspectives – including ones you’ve likely never considered before. Featuring 4 new talks, a poet-in-residence, guest artists from Stonebelt, and updates on a previous TEDxBloomington talk by Nikki Pohl.

BJ Yoho

BJ Yoho is a college student at Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington, Indiana. A life long patient at Riley Children’s Hospital, BJ has dedicated himself to various charity organizations with the purpose of giving back to those who once helped him.

Lisa Robbin Young is the author of Creative Freedom: How to own your dreams without selling your soul - a guide to personal and financial success as a creative entrepreneur (http://creativefreedombook.com). She’s an award-winning speaker, best-selling business author, and accomplished musician with multiple albums to her credit. Lisa founded her business consultancy to support unconventional entrepreneurs who want to make their mark on the world profitably and sustainably. Lisa's been featured in print, online, and on TV - including a reality series on Disney+. Lisa believes that the best way to be truly successful in life and business is to be yourself – warts, sparkles, and all.

Elliot Thornton
Elliot Thornton

Elliot is the manager of computational linguistics at The Language Conservancy (TLC) in Bloomington, IN. He currently works with linguists and indigenous stakeholders on 13 endangered language dictionaries and has overseen the release of freely available mobile and web dictionaries for Ho-Chunk, Lakota, Dakota, Cowlitz Salish, Stoney Nakoda, and Ute Mountain Ute. He also was a primary software developer of the Owóksape elearning platform for Lakota.

Mark Silver (HeartofBusiness.com) is a Sufist business coach who speaks on a wide variety of business issues. He's been a small business owner for decades. For him, the topic of business sustainability is about being heart-centered. He also works with micro-small businesses. He's writing a book that explores the nature of heart-centered business, and the sustainability of being a business owner.

David Stanley (Artist in Residence)

David will perform (via video) an original Alexandrine Sonnet titled “Sonnet 195. Sustainability” that he wrote especially for our event. David L. Stanley, B.Sc., M.A. is a teacher, author, poet, voice-over actor, and speaker. His works on men, depression, suicide, fatherhood, and professional bicycle racing have appeared in national magazines. He speaks on fatherhood, motivation, and how to pitch yourself into the workplace. He has read his sonnets at the Dad 2.0 Summit. His work has appeared in print in Stanchion Magazine, Flyover Country, the State News, and many on-line sites. His second book, October, 2019, is From Jim Crow to CEO, the Willie Artis Story. Stanley co-wrote the autobiography of Willie Artis, a Black industrialist born in Memphis during the Great Depression who rose to success in Stanley’s home of Flint, MI. Stanley’s first book, Melanoma, It Started with a Freckle, March, 2016, reached #1 in dermatology and skin wellness. His novel, About a Goat, is the story of two men, friendship, fathers, and war; is currently out on submission.
