THURSDAY MORNING EDIT: We had to vacate the MCPL Auditorium because the Internet stalled. We’re now across the street at the offices of Career Investments — 403 E. 6th St., Suite 200. We’re watching on my laptop, but it’s still streaming, which is an improvement over the MCPL today!

Just like we did in early March, we have the opportunity to watch a day of the TED conference while sitting comfortably in the auditorium of the Monroe County Public Library, right here in Bloomington. This time, it’s TED Global, The Stuff of Life, happening this week in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Because of the five hour time difference between Edinburgh and Bloomington, we’ll be time-shifting (i.e., not literally livestreaming, but streaming with a time delay). Instead of having people arise to watch the show starting at 4:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday (and trying to find a venue open at that hour!), we’ll capture video from all the speakers Wednesday and show them at the MCPL Auditorium starting at 9:15.m. local time Thursday, July 14.

This event is free, and you’re welcome to come and go as you like. We ask that you complete a short registration form at this link so we can have an idea how many people to expect at what times, please.

Check out the speaker lineup:

We’re SO excited about getting our TEDxBloomington speakers’ videos posted on YouTube … and we heard that you’d like to watch them in order, to see how the speakers’ presentations built upon one another and progressed through the day, how the session themes were conveyed by the speakers, and how the “big stage” TED videos interspersed on the 14th carried the themes and ideas even further.

You have two options.

Right now, you can follow the list below and click on each link, watch our presenters and performers and the TED videos that we showed on May 14, in order.

And an even better option will be announced in a few weeks.

Early this fall we’ll announce the dates and location for a series of TEDxBloomingtonSalons we’re calling “TEDxBloomingtonRedux.” In this series of four two-hour events, you’ll be able to join with a live audience to watch video from each of our four themed segments from May 14: Wisdom, Learning, Creativity & Play. In contrast with what’s available today on YouTube, these videos will include the astute and entertaining introductions by our onstage-host, Sarah Smith-Robbins, and more from DJ Shiftee. And although their presentations from May 14 will be presented via video, some of our speakers will join us for discussion, too.

Granted, it’s still not as phenomenal as May 14 was, live and in person, but in case you missed that event or just want a “refresher course,” TEDxBloomingtonRedux will be way more fun than watching at your computer.

Details to come.

So back to your first option … here’s a list of the speakers/performers/TEDTalks in the order they appeared on the Buskirk-Chumley stage. Enjoy!

Theme 1: Wisdom

TEDxBloomington is just a few weeks away, and as registrations and ticket sales rise, our Kitchen Cabinet (the local planning team) climbed the ladder to the catwalk in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater for a group photo! Maybe next time we’ll bring up some TED-red paint and paint one of those Xs up there.

From left to right, Mike Trotzke, Maarten Bout (up high), Kevin Makice (down low), Luci Englert McKean (in between), Kalynn Huffman Brower, Sally Meyer, Debby Herbenick, Gail Hale, and Nina Onesti. Not pictured: Jenn Hileman or our out-of-town team members (Sorry, guys!).

Three stories up, it’s quite a view … but not as good a view as you’ll have from your seats of our speakers onstage on May 14 (plus, the ladder’s a little scary!)

If you haven’t already registered and purchased your ticket, don’t delay! We’ve already sold more than a third of the house. And if you’re coming in from out of town, be sure to book your hotel room soon to make sure you’ll have a bed! We have discounted rooms — check out the “Travel Details” link under “Attend” at the top of this page.

See you soon!

We are excited to announce that TEDxBloomington tickets for the May 14th “Wisdom of Play” event can be purchased online now!

Details: The conference will be held on Saturday, May 14, in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 East Kirkwood Avenue, just off campus in downtown Bloomington. The first presentation begins promptly at 9 a.m. so please plan to arrive by 8:45 so you can select a good seat.

Cost: Tickets for the full-day, fast-paced event featuring 20+ world-class speakers cost only $60 and include lunch! (If this amount exceeds your budget, see below for scholarship information.)

Register and buy: Click here to register for and then purchase your ticket for a seat in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater now. Seats are limited, so don’t delay. Each attendee must register to buy a ticket, so if you want to bring friends, have them fill out the registration form, as well.

Previous Applicants: If you’ve already submitted an application, check your email for the official purchase registration link. The option to purchase seats will be saved for a limited time for all who have already submitted an application. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Luci McKean at luci [at] tedxbloomington [dot] com.

Scholarship Tickets: We also have a limited number of scholarship tickets for individuals who cannot afford the ticket but will be able to contribute in a unique way to the TEDxBloomington community. If you feel that this describes you, please click the registration link above and be sure to also fill out the section related to the scholarship request. We will contact scholarship applicants after May 1.

Shift from Application to Purchase: From the beginning, we’ve been excited to have a passionate and diverse audience. Our original application process was offered to ensure that a wide range of voices were brought together on May 14th.

Since we’ve begun reading all of the applications over the last few weeks, we’ve been absolutely blown away by the incredible range of perspectives, stories, and an overall passion for TED that have been shared with us. It quickly became clear that every one of the applicants so far will be a wonderful addition to our community.

So, to that end, we’ve decided to open up ticket purchase to all (and do away with our initial application process). This is a direct response to the amazing group of folks who have already shown us that the TEDxBloomington community is already thriving. And we can’t be more excited about that!

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Luci McKean at luci [at] tedxbloomington [dot] com. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you on May 14th and at other Wisdom of Play events leading up to our conference!

Sorry we can’t fly you all to California for the conference, but you can join us in Bloomington to watch a full day’s worth of programming live from the TED stage for free!

Wednesday, March 2nd, 11:15 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Monroe County Public Library Auditorium, 303 East Kirkwood Avenue

Please fill out this reservation form so we can know how many people to expect and can keep you informed. Feel free to come for all day or only a portion, to drop in and out (pending open seats in the auditorium, of course!)

You can preview a tentative schedule for March 2, always somewhat subject to change, and remember that page reflects West Coast times. We’ll follow along, live, right up until the library closes and we have to run!

Note that this livestream will not be available to individuals from their own computers: if you want to watch, you have to come sit with us in the library auditorium. It’s better that way, anyway: not only will you have your own responses to the speakers, but you’ll be enriched by conversations with others in the room having their own responses.

It’s not exactly the same experience you’ll have, sitting in the audience for our May 14, The Wisdom of Play event, but it’s the closest we can manage for you in the meantime. Hope to see you all there!

Despite temperatures in the teens and twenties, three inches of snow and ice on the ground, and “dead week” on campus (the week before finals), about 30 hardy women and men came out to the TEDxBloomington Livestream presentation of the TEDWomen conference on December 7-8. Reactions were positive to the speakers from the Washington D.C. stage, with much conversation during the breaks.

TEDWomen is an official TED conference that will reveal: Who are the women leading change? What ideas are they championing? And how will they shape the future? TEDWomen will also reveal women and men in concert with one another, orchestrating different but complementary approaches to ideas worth spreading

Thanks to our co-hosts, IU’s Women in Informatics and Computing, especially Jenny Hertel, and to our sponsors: IU Informatics, University Information Technology Services, Bloomingfoods, Bloomington Bagel Company, and Career Investments.

Beating the odds as the “un-handyman” of the family, he is also interested in building larger structures and has erected several sandboxes. Now he is planning a modest size treehouse in the yet-unsuspecting pine in his backyard. Maarten can be caught playing a host of (board-) games and sports and takes great interest in design, technology, music and reading.

By Day / Maarten came to the U.S. as a Fulbright Scholar and had plans to be out of the country as soon as the last paper was written. Little did he know, he was about to meet his dream girl, fall in love and stick around for a little longer, not realizing he was also getting hooked on the community. Now the Marketing Director at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, where exciting stuff happens every day, he promotes the Performing Arts as if his life depends on it. In his work he seeks out technology to simplify processes, open up staff time and free up resources. Formerly leader of a classical music ensemble, an arts education non-profit, a music educator and a contractor for different large corporations, Maarten has worked in greatly diverse environments with equally diverse communities of people.

She gets this from her son, Ethan. They make art, read books, climb trees, skateboard, sing nonsense songs, jump off things, listen to great music and find every chance they can to play. Lover of the culinary arts, her kitchen is full of wonderful tools and flavors. Her mother never told her that she shouldn’t play with her food and so weird ingredients and unique kitchen implements are used in ways that occasionally resemble the experiments of a mad scientist to create a wide variety of odd, terrible and often amazing things to eat.

By Day / A classically trained musician who didn’t like being broke all the time, Jenn got a job at the local food co-op. Over the last 10 years she has been a massage therapist, built houses out of dirt and straw and survived living off the grid. This was all while working at Bloomingfoods – where she is immersed in the connections and communities our food beliefs, patterns and habits create. In the time that is left over, Jenn helps run The Atlas, is a Humanetrix board member, a volunteer with Lotus Festival, and the Executive Director for The Combine.

She loves words, reading half of books, collecting cliches, and is proud to be a two time Indiana state spelling champion. Some of her favorite days have found her eating hot tomatoes off the vine, discovering truly great walks, dancing all night, and being encircled by a pack of wolves in the Minnesota wilderness. Above all else, Sally enjoys contemplating the nature of happiness and finding its roots in all these little things.

By Day / Sally is the Box Office Manager at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, where she coordinates ticketing for every event that happens on-site, as well as for the events organized by approximately 50 other arts organizations and promoters in this artistically rich community. Educated as an art historian at Indiana University and the University of Illinois, she has previously worked as a Museum Education Representative at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures and as an Adjunct Faculty member teaching art history at IUPUI.
